Spring has sprung and it’s time to start thinking about a different way of tackling the slopes. At Banff National Park, there are so many ways to take advantage of the spring skiing, longer daylight hours, and fantastic après at the three different resorts that make up Banff: Lake Louise, Norquay, and Sunshine. With the resorts open until May, Banff has the longest ski season in North America, and is not to be overlooked this spring.
Spring Skiing Tips &Tricks
Skiing the spring requires a few different tactics than skiing the fluffy white powder of the winter. Goggle tans galore! With warmer temps, longer days, and sunnier skies, shed a layer or two and soak in that sun!
The snow in spring is what we often call “cornmeal snow”, which means one can really work on technique on the groomed runs. With the sun-warmed snow, turns come easily and gently, and technique skyrockets, while the snow smoothly glides underfoot.
Not only will the snow be fun and forgiving, the lift lines will be significantly shorter than during the winter season, offering you a chance to get the most runs in that you possibly can during those spring bluebird days.
As the #1 Ski Resort in Canada for the third year in a row, Lake Louise boasts an astounding variety of runs for all levels. Not only that, but the area offers some fun and exciting events such as Red Bull Nordix 2016 on March 12. Come check out top international athletes and local talent duke it out at what has been called “Skier-X with a diabolic twist”.
For beginner or low intermediate skiers and boarders, check out Front Side’s Forget-Me-Not and Paris Basin runs for good, mellow runs off of the Glacier Express Quad and the Grizzly Express Gondola. Coral Cutoff and Viking Ridge can be accessed via the Top of the World Six Pack Express Chair and the Grizzly Express Gondola, and provide access to world class conditions for those learning to ski.
Intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders can explore the backside bowl, which is littered with black diamond runs in the Jackpot area. These runs are especially fantastic in the high-visibility weather of spring.
Norquay offers an excellent alternative to Lake Louise for a ski area to hit up this spring. To get a feeling of old time ski prices, they offer a blast from the past with a 90 cent ski day on March 9, the proceeds from which are donated to a local charity! In addition, don’t miss out on Easter Day Brunch and Egg Hunt, which is from 10-1 on March 27.
Norquay has many runs to tackle during the spring season: If you’re just starting out, make sure to hit up the sunny Shooting Star onto the Zoomer run, where you can perfect your turns. For more advanced skiers, make sure to hit up Corvid’s run off of the North American chair, and head down over to Waterfall and finally onto Lone Pine to finish up the run. These sunny slopes will be perfect spring skiing, and you can enjoy the ride without the bitter cold of winter!
Sunshine is an incredible area in the spring! Come on out to Mad Trapper’s from 10-3 on March 13 for Salomon Snowboard Demo Day, where you can try out new snowboards and talk to reps about tips and tricks on their favourite boards. What better way to explore spring boarding than by testing out tons of different styles of boards? In addition, don’t miss out on St. Patrick’s celebrations on March 17 in Sunshine Village, where prizes are to be won all day long! And here’s an extra bonus: if you purchase a spring ski pass at Sunshine before March 19, you’ll receive two 50% off Adult Day Lift Tickets, so the time to ski is now!
As for the runs to try, intermediate skiers should check out the 27 World Cup Downhill off of the Great Divide Express Quad. This south-facing slope offers a nice sunny experience as you cruise down the mountain. For more advanced skiers and snowboarders, don’t miss out on Bye Bye Bowl!
