Staying in Canmore is the way to discover a more peaceful Rocky Mountain experience, away from the hustle and bustle of Banff (25 km to the west) and right in the midst of authentic wilderness, beneath the watchful eyes of the Three Sisters. Most of the people that choose to live there vibrate on a higher frequency and you’ll feel the positivity when you visit. It’s a town of mystics and healers and outdoorsmen and environmentalists and unadulterated nature-worshippers in all shapes and tones. It’s a truly vibrant zone, an alfresco cathedral to Planet Earth. 1883: An early Catholic explorer in the Bow River Valley looked upon a mountain with three peaks freshly blanketed by a heavy snowstorm and perceived a trio of praying nuns. A few years later, a protestant officially changed the name to the Three Sisters by including it on the new map. Individually they are known as Big Sister (Faith), Middle Sister (Charity) and Little Sister (Hope). But all I see are Lions: Sphinxes, poised and proud and pointing northwest.

And the mighty Leo pair, queen and king protecting the valley below.

Canmore offers an abundance of good times, with its high quality organic restaurants and inviting cafés; its eclectic boutiques and thought-inspiring galleries. An expansive network of trails branch out from Canmore’s centre and wind into the surrounding mountains. From here you can take part in activities galore, from outstanding cross-country skiing in the winter to world-class golfing in the summer. Canmore also hosts special events and festivals that are rapidly gaining popularity, like the Folk Fest and Highland Games. Canmore is the main gateway to the stunning Kananaskis Country Provincial Park, to the east, and an excellent alternative to staying in Banff, for reasons we’ll now explore.

1. Canmore hotels are usually cheaper than Banff. As Canmore is just outside the boundaries of Banff National Park, staying in Canmore means you avoid the premium placed on the well-established tourist destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll find much better rates in Canmore with bigger units: that’s superior value.

2. More fully equipped suites and condos than Banff. The majority of accommodation in Canmore is that of the condominium variety: more home-like and comfortable than most of the standard hotel rooms in Banff. If you’re looking for your own kitchen to make meals and save some money not eating out all the time, or if you’re looking for multiple bedrooms and your own self-contained space, Canmore is the place.

3. Canmore is much less busy than Banff. At the peak of the high-season (July/August), Banff is packed with crowds of tourists. Many have their necks craned to admire the surrounding mountains and it can be a trick just to avoid these walking obstacles along Banff Avenue. Meanwhile, on the other end of the spectrum, downtown Canmore is peaceful and friendly. Though there are still many happy tourists, the place radiates more serenity, and you won’t have to wait for a table.

4. Canmore is closer to Calgary. Most visitors are coming in from Calgary on the 90 minute drive westwards down the TransCanada #1. Although it’s only a twenty minute difference between Canmore and Banff, the shorter journey is nice, especially if you have limited time.

Canmore Accommodation

The Chateau Canmore

The Chateau Canmore is a full-service all-suite resort where every room features gas fireplaces, kitchenettes, siting areas, and magnificent mountain views. It’s close to everything and comes with such amenities as fitness facility, indoor swimming pool, outdoor hot tub, sauna, and tennis court.

Canadian Rockies Chalet

Canadian Rockies Chalet offers sprawling two- and three-bedroom chalets with huge vistas, private entry, balcony or patio, and full kitchen equipped with a dishwasher, full stove, microwave, refrigerator and dining area. Some units also have a gas fireplace to set the ambience off right.

Canmore Activities

Golf: Canmore is a bit of a Rocky Mountain golf Mecca, with three amazing 18-hole courses in the area; (there’s just one in Banff). Tee off in the spectacular setting, surrounded by majestic mountains and mingling with wildlife, at world-class SilverTip Golf & Country Club; public Canmore Golf & Curling Club; and championship Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club.

Hiking: Head off into the hills for some of the world’s best hiking. Grotto Canyon is a sacred power spot to where the Hopi from Arizona trekked 1,300 years ago just to experience its energy vortex. Grassi Lakes takes you up past a huge waterfall to a pair of small turquoise lakes and a sweeping views of Canmore and the valley.

Spelunking: The only accessible cave tours are in Canmore, where you’ll venture deep into Rat’s Nest Cave, rappelling down into a chamber filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and a crystal clear pool.

Nordic Centre: The site of the Nordic skiing events at the ’88 Calgary Olympics, experience over 70 km of exceptional trails perfect for cross-country skiing in the winter and mountain biking in the summer. There’s also a 3km paved roller ski-training loop to practice your skills in the offseason, as well as a major 18-hole disc golfing course.

3. Coyotes Southwestern Grill (85%) $$$

Come to Coyotes for some healthy and hearty dining made from scratch with fresh ingredients. The service is attentive, the atmosphere is relaxing, and the dishes are creative and tasty. While the majority of reviews are favourable, some point out that third place may be overrated for an average experience. Bring your own bottle of wine in for free on Wing Wednesdays. coyotesbanff.com 206 Caribou Street.

4. Grizzly House (78%) $$$$

If you’re looking for a unique and memorable dining experience, come to Grizzly House for the fondue. Try the Hunter Fondue (buffalo, wild boar, and venison) or Exotic Fondue (shark, alligator, rattlesnake, ostrich, etc.). The atmosphere is like a ski lodge from the 70s and service is always good but it’s expensive (some say overpriced). You’ll find phones on all the tables to call other tables if you like, a throwback from its origins as Western Canada’s first disco. banffgrizzlyhouse.com 207 Banff Avenue.

5. Chaya (87%) $

Chaya delivers awesome Japanese food at an awesome price. The ramen noodles are perfect and people are known to flock from Calgary just for a bite from this restaurant with a small location and a big taste. The staff are friendly and you’re sure to have a wonderful time here. This is one restaurant on the Top 10 Urbanspoon Banff list that we can support unanimously. 118 Banff Avenue.

6. Barpa Bill’s Souvlaki (91%) $$

This hidden gem is the best spot in Banff for fast food that doesn’t taste like fast food. They do excellent souvlaki and what might be the best burgers in the valley. Many locals call it the greatest little secret in Banff with authentic flavour and an inexpensive price point. 223 Bear Street.

7. Saltlik Steakhouse (77%) $$$$

The Saltlik does one heck of a steak along with a wonderful dining experience. The ambience is casual and comfortable and makes for a great night out. Some reviews call it overpriced and complain about being harassed from rude and/or overbearing servers, while others point out that things in general are usually more expensive in Banff and service is very good. Seems to be recommended, and we know they do a great Caesar. saltlik.com 221 Bear Street.

8. The Bison (72%) $$$$

Come to the Bison for regional, seasonal, classic Canadian dining. With awesome mountain views (especially from the rooftop patio) and a funky ambience, this restaurant does inspired dishes well. Of course they do an excellent bison steak and the pizza is outstanding as well. Most reviews rave while others say it’s disappointing service and average for the price. How will your experience be? thebison.ca 211 Bear Street.

9. St. James’s Gate (87%) $$

This authentic Irish pub is a lively establishment that offers a fun experience in Banff. The food is generally quite exceptional for a pub and the service is usually friendly and positive, although some reviews point out the service could be better. There’s a great beer selection and they do live Celtic music often. Try the Stuffed Yorkies with your Guinness! stjamesgatebanff.com 207 Wolf Street.

10. The Eddie Burger & Bar (76%) $$

Build your own or choose from the classics at what many say is the best gourmet burgers in Banff. Seating is limited in the cozy and trendy room. The burgers are unique and exciting – and if you’re a high roller be sure to get the King Eddie (1lb waygu beef burger and bottle of ’05 Joseph Phelps Insignia for $299). Some complaints about the staff and the fries but the burgers have to be experienced. eddieburgerbar.ca 137 Banff Avenue.

It’s one of those common facts of life that children love to both splish and splash, though rarely enjoy taking a bath. Whether it’s with foam noodles, beach-balls, or just seeing who can do the best cannonball, kids thrive in the joyful aquatic environments of a pool. The water does something magic to a human, perhaps because the majority of our bodies are composed of water. Pools can also be good for swimming laps and exercise, if they aren’t chock full of screaming kids. If you’re into water-bound fun, you’ll want to make sure you stay at a Banff hotel that offers the best in pools and hot tubs. The hot water of the jacuzzi brings pleasure to those who wish to soak up relaxation, just like the Banff pioneers would do in the natural hot springs found bubbling inside the surrounding mountains.
When you’re on vacation in Banff the hotel matters; and if you have kids, the quality of the pool can sometimes be a make-or-break scenario. It’s one of those common facts of life that children love to both splish and splash, though rarely enjoy taking a bath.
Cave and Basin National Historic Site in Banff’s Sulphur Mountain is the birthplace of Canada’s National Park system. In 1883, two Canadian Pacific railway workers descended into the cave using a fallen tree dropped through the skylight entrance. These chaps tried to privatize the cave and sell entrance, a claim that was contested by various groups in the area, before the government stepped in and took over. While the Cave and Basin pool is no more, the Upper Hot Springs are one of Banff’s most popular things to do. There’s many other solid pools in Banff, but here are our top three favourites:

Douglas Fir Resort & Chalets

The Douglas Fir Resort is the best pool option for families with kids, with their vaunted waterpark that will have the kids begging for more. Two giant waterslides offers excitement and fun for the whole family as they twist and turn into the pool below. There’s also a big swimming pool and a little kiddies pool. And when you want to relax, there’s a jacuzzi for up to two dozen people and a large steam room to marinate within.

Science has gone into engineering the waterslides specifically for the best possible experience, and careful thought of state-of-the-art waterpark techniques has created a warm and humid environment. This climate maximizes comfort and keeps bathers from getting cold as they splash into the pool and climb the steps back up to do it again. The high humidity makes you feel like you’re in a jungle as well as slows down evaporation from your body so as to prevent chills. Free entry to the waterpark for guests of the hotel. Waterslides are open til 9:30 pm. If you’re not a guest, you can pay $20 for general admission to use the waterpark any day of the week except Friday and Saturday, when it’s for registered guests only.

There’s also an indoor Playzone (the largest in Western Canada at over two-storeys high and 36-feet long) that kids will absolutely adore. The interactive structure is designed like a giant treehouse, with slides and tunnels and nets that will inspire imagination and play for those 12 years and under. Unlike the pool, however, the Playzone is for registered guests only and open daily from 8 to 8.

Fox Hotel & Suites

Welcome to the grotto at the Fox Hotel & Suites. One of the most creative hot pools around, the grotto is designed to resemble the historic pools at the Cave & Basin site, where the original hot springs were discovered that inspired the area to become the first national park in Canada (and the second in North America). Like the original hot spring cave, you’ll find it underground, visible through a viewing hole in the courtyard. The hot pool winds around the rock formations that make you feel like you’re in an actual cave, with large stones jutting out from the water here and there.

Hidden Ridge

The two giant outdoor hot tubs at Hidden Ridge Resort offer one of the best views in the Rockies. Both of these new hot pools are positioned on said hidden ridge with a sprawling vista of the Bow River valley wilderness and Banff townsite laid out before you. The hot pools are designed organically with natural curves and rock features that make you feel like you’re soaking directly on the mountainside. There’s also a sauna to kick back and relax in the steam.

Honourable Mentions for Banff Hotels’ Pools

Inns of Banff: Outdoor Rooftop Hot Pool (open til 10pm) where you can soak it up in style, surrounded by majestic peaks. There’s also a small indoor swimming pool, whirlpool, and hot sauna (open til 11pm).

Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise: Huge heated indoor pool and jacuzzi along with high ceilings creates a great space for relaxation or swimming laps.

Intermediate: Tin Can Alley No. 6 — Immediately to the right off the WaWa Quad Chair, a wonderfully gladed run, challenging enough for those learning while perfect for those looking to just cruise.

Advanced: Laryx No. 48 — Just to the left of Mount Standish Express, with challenging steeps and drops, as well as panoramic views of Goat’s Eye, Delirium Dive (where the real challenge lies) and Lookout Mountain.

The Rockies are truly a glorious sight to behold, most appreciated in their grandeur if you have the opportunity to drive west from the Prairies (from Calgary, for example) and the big sky country gives way to rolling foothills and the horizon line of mountains grows larger and larger until you’re surrounded by the mighty peaks. The Rockies stretch more than 3,000 miles from the northernmost part of British Columbia down to New Mexico. These monolithic beings have been around for 80 million years and they’ve been inhabited since the last ice age, although of course aside from a special few lucky people that call the Rockies home, it’s mostly a wilderness prime for tourism – especially hiking, camping, mountaineering, mountain biking, and skiing. Check out what Banff summer activities are going on and make plans to get out there yourself!

BANFF NATIONAL PARK Canada’s oldest park and North America’s second oldest (after Yellowstone) was established in 1885, twelve years before Canada even became a country. The discovery of the hot springs in Banff sparked a conflict between commercial interests that Canada’s first Prime Minsiter, John A. MacDonald settled by making the springs a reserve, which then expanded. The park soon encompassed 6,641 km2 (2,564 sq mi) of wild mountain terrain with glaciers, icefields, and coniferous forests. The Canadian Pacific Railway was instrumental in the park’s initial exploration and subsequent preservation, attracting tourists with their castle hotels in the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Before the 1960s the park was only accessible in the summer and one imagines similar situations to The Shining occurring to the winter watchmen of these opulent and mysterious hotels. Visits to Banff are now around 5 million tourists annually, a number that threatens the health of the ecosystem, despite its protective status. Posing an apparent threat to sportsmen and tourism, officials had the local Stoney (Assiniboin) Indians removed from the Park during 1890-1920, a measure that was welcomed at the time with the primitive outlook that the Indians must be ‘civilized’. Wealthy European tourists would come on the ocean liners and upper class Americans would venture north to explore the territory. One of the original guides of the area were Jim and Bill Brewster, progenitors of Brewster’s Mountain Lodge as we know it today. CLIMATE Banff National Park falls under the subarctic climate distinction, with its cold, snowy winters (average -10°C [14 °F]) and mild pleasant summers (average 15°C [59 °F]). Located on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, Banff National Park receives approximately 472 mm (18.6 in) of precipitation annually, as opposed to the western side of the divide – such as our Enjoy Whistler branch – that receives twices as much. The average snowfall in Banff townsite is 234 mm (9.2 in) and receiving slightly more is Lake Louise, an hour’s drive east, at 290 mm (11 in).
Banff National Park is one of the most visited national parks in North America, attracting visitors from around the world. During the high season of summer goodness, 42% of park visitors are from Canada (23% from Alberta), while 35% are from the USA and 20% from Europe. There is also a significant amount of Asian tourists to the park at any given time and many of the shops in Banff cater to these crowds. A park pass is required to stop in the park although drivers passing through along the Trans-Canada Highway can roll right through.

CRASHER SQUIRREL

In 2009, a couple visiting Banff National Park from Minnesota happened to capture a Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel on their remote shutter release. After being featured on a National Geographic “Your Shot” contest, the image and the squirrel quickly became a popular Internet meme. The squirrel is perfectly in focus in a pose reminiscent of the gopher from Caddyshack, with paws held at chest level and eyes staring directly into the camera. Unbeknownst to the squirrel, his likeness became an ambassador to Banff, attracting 82 million impressions within weeks. The squirrel was even made an honorary citizen of Banff, allowing it to vote, if it were so inclined to cash in on its stardom. While the current whereabouts of the Crasher Squirrel remain unknown, today its memory lives on in a downloadable iPhone app called Squirrelizer that inserts the furry little Banff celeb into any of your own photos.

BEST BREAKFAST IN BANFF: It’s always a good choice at Coyotes Deli and Grill, a southwestern-themed local favourite breakfast and brunch spot, with an exceptional French toast with cream cheese and fresh fruit.

BEST APRÉS: Juniper Bistro & Lounge: Right at the base of Mount Norquay Road you’ll find a phenomenal patio with one of the most miraculous views in Banff, sprawling across the Bow Valley with Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain in the distance – and great appies.

Rose & Crown: The Rose is a local favourite haunt for everything from rooftop patio drinks to relaxed and scrumptious dinner to a full-on party with live music.

St. James Gate: An authentic Irish pub in downtown Banff with hearty food, live Celtic music to get your feed stomping and an impressive draught and Scotch selection.

Wild Bill’s Legendary Saloon: This cowboy bar puts the wild in the west, with live country music, two-stepping and line-dancing. It’s named after Buffalo Bill Peyto, a Banff pioneer, who once famously strolled into a Banff saloon with a live lynx on his back.

The Riverview Lounge: You don’t need to stay at the Banff Springs Hotel to appreciate its magnificence. Explore the old castle-like hotel and have a drink at The Riverview, with a view down into the canyon and the Bow River below. The drink menu is long and the food is great.

The Glacier Saloon: This saloon at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise offers an amazing view of the stunning lake and it’s environs. Decorated in old western style, you’ll feel a sense of timelessness at this must-see aprés spot while you’re in Lake Louise exploring the Chateau.

Sentinel Pass: Probably the best hike in the whole park (and the highest maintained trail in Canada), the route moves through Larch Valley up to Sentinel Pass where the awe-inspring vista gives way onto the Valley of the Ten Peaks.

Paradise Valley: This journey takes you into a cathedral of some of the tallest peaks in Banff, along with mirror lakes, huge rock walls, and cascading waterfalls – don’t forget your camera!

Healy Pass: Climb gradually through the thick forest from Sunshine Village and into a wonderful wildflower-filled meadow, with Mount Assiniboine towering majestically.

Helen Lake: The highlight of this hike is the sprawling alpine meadow (one of the park’s largest) and surrounded by impressive mountains and glaciers.

Best Places To See Wildlife in Banff

Minnewanka Loop: This classic drive around Banff offers stunning views of Rundle, Cascade, the Fairholme Range and Lake Minnewanka itself – and the animals are usually out in full force. You might spot elk all the way from Banff to Two Jack Lake and the bighorn sheep that hang out on rock bluffs and the south-facing slopes along the road. In the winter, the bighorns lick the salt off stopped cars here, earning the area the moniker of the Banff Car Wash.

Bow Valley Parkway: Covering more land allows you to see more wildlife than on foot, especially on this peaceful stretch of highway between Banff and Lake Louise. Watch for elk, bears, coyotes, deer, moose, and even wolves in the forest and open meadows along the road. You’ll drive beneath the occasional animal overpass where the wildlife can safely cross the highway.

Mount Norquay Road: A scenic drive with fabulous wildlife-viewing opportunities, the road up to the ski hill with its switchbacks is a great spot to see mule deer and bighorn sheep; especially the big open patch near the top of the road where there always seems to be an abundance of beautiful creatures.

The Marsh Loop: This swampy zone made by the mixture of the Bow River and the Sulphur Mountain hot springs features a 2.5-km loop trail that finishes at the Cave and Basin Museum. Along the way you’ll pass through a vibrant bird habitat where huge elk could be grazing just feet away from you. Under the boardwalk in the mineral-rich, heated waters is home to a rare Banff Springs snail as well as some exotic fish that were introduced to the warm water.

With such a monumental occasion in front you, it’s important to go all out and make this the party to end all parties. You’ll want to have the perfect activities and events planned to necessitate proper bonding, and in Banff the stag/stagette tradition is well established, attracting groups of revelers from across North America to celebrate the big event. Sharing an action-packed, adventure with your closest friends in the Rocky Mountains will undoubtedly provide unforgettable memories to last a lifetime. Banff Bachelor Party (Stag Party) First a little context: Did you know the concept of a bachelor party is traced back to the Spartans in 5th Century BC? They would host an epic feast for the groom-to-be the night before the wedding, an evening undoubtedly spent toasting the groom, and each other and shouting, “THIS IS SPARTA!” The bachelor’s dinner concept continued into modern times and the “dinner” eventually evolved into the “party”, as the dinner and toasts were largely replaced by, or supplemented with, strippers, gambling, and copious amounts of alcohol. Fortunately these kind of barn-burner bonanzas seem to be going out of style, as they neither respect the bride-to-be nor represent “one more night of freedom”, as most fellas that are ready to be married are past the wild partying stages anyway. And so today this important rite of passage from single life to marriage is based more on male bonding and the chance to do some fun activities together. Blowing off some pre-nuptial jitters is also a nice added benefit of the modern bachelor party. Plan some activities for your weekend excursion in Banff.
If you’re looking for a more chill stag party, there are lots of other calmer activities to celebrate the big day. Take the boys fly fishing or for a round of golf at one of the area’s seven amazing courses. There’s also an excellent casino at Stoney Nakoda Resort (aka the Basecamp of the Rockies), located 30 minutes east of Banff.

|

Tips for Throwing a Premium Banff Bachelor Party:

Don’t do anything too crazy/dangerous. Have a blast but don’t have your groom walking down the aisle on crutches.

Keep the groom-to-be or bride-to-be in mind! Surprise them but do what they would like.

Consider the relative budgets of your friends and make sure the star doesn’t pay for a thing.

Choose some good meals to go with your activities and strive for a healthy but adventurous balance.

Encourage your friends to make funny roasts and poignant toasts at dinner, those words and stories that might not be completely appropriate to share at the wedding.

Banff Bachelorette Party (Stagette Party)

For the ladies, all the same heart-pounding adventure options are fair game and while you’ll have a blast getting wild, there’s just as much fun to be had taking it easy. Hit up one of the spas in the morning when it’s not as busy for the pinnacle of pampering, bliss, and beauty. Group pedicures, milk baths, and relaxation will always work to bring the gals together. And of course a day of shopping around the Banff and patio-hopping from pub to pub is always an excellent decision. Slightly risqué scavenger hunts are hugely popular with Banff bachelorette parties and you’re sure to find an abundance of like-minded patrons more than happy to help with any shenanigans you can dream up.

Whatever your theme, you’ll find the best stage to celebrate your girl’s final party before being married. And once the sun sets on your day, it’s time for some dancing. Do some two-stepping at Wild Bill’s before heading to Aurora and the Dancing Sasquatch nightclubs to shake it like a polaroid picture, as they say. Banff has whatever you want to celebrate this monumental rite of passage in true style.

Where To Stay For Your Banff Bachelor or Bachelorette Party
