Fun Things To Do For Banff Kids
- Banff Gondola - Ride the gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain for an amazing view of Banff and the mountains surrounding. You can hike the trail, but it’s quite strenuous and steep, but totally doable if you wear good shoes. Remember to dress for the weather, it’s often very windy at the top. And don’t forget to bring your camera!
- Banff Hot Springs – Gear up in some rented historical suits (the bulky one-pieces they wore a hundred years ago) and take a dip in the natural hot springs of Sulphur Mountain.
- Stargazing - Due to lack of light pollution from the city, the night skies of Banff offer the opportunity for kids of all ages to see the stars or the Milky Way. You’ll want to get away from the lights in the townsite by heading off to locations like Tunnel Mountain Meadows (summer only), Lake Minnewanka, the Upper Bankhead picnic area on the Lake Minnewanka road (summer only), Vermilion Lakes, or the Banff Recreation Grounds. If you’re stargazing in winter, you may also see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). And you’ll also have the chance to hear owls hoot, wolves howl, and elk bugle at night.
- Dogsledding - Rip around the wilderness in a sleigh pulled by a team of Huskies for a thrilling mountain experience.
- Iceskating - Rentals skates from Snowtips on Bear St (near the Lux Theatre) and head off to a frozen pond like Vermilion Lakes, Johnson Lake, or the Bow River just downstream from the Blue Canoe docks. The Fairmont Banff Springs often has an outdoor ice rink and ice hockey nets set up as well as being lit at night and offering hot chocolate and firepits to warm up.
- Hiking: Lace up the shoes for several beautiful and easy trails of less than an hour around Banff and Lake Louise. Visit Johnston Canyon (on Hwy 1A, aka Bow Valley Trail), but go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Take the short hike to the lower and upper falls, or extend the hike for a few hours and head up to the inkpots.Tunnel Mountain is slightly more challenging, requiring up to one hour with an elevation gain of about 800 ft (240 m), and requires closer supervision, since there are significant natural risks close to the top (cliffs); however, your 9- or 10-year old will be able to say that they have climbed all the way to the top of a mountain upon completing this hike!
